Picolo, San Telmo, Tenerife
We’ve eaten here once with a group of friends, and I would need some persuading to try it again.
Ambiance: one of many establishments overlooking the sea, it’s at the end of a row of places where you can walk along their terraces and jump from bar to restaurant at whim. It’s basic stuff; non-descript tables, big umbrellas, so-so chairs, all typical of this kind of establishment, so neither particularly good nor particularly bad. Arriving here in the evening, the music was perhaps a bit overpowering. This is probably to drown out the music of all the other bars along the row. Several times I couldn’t hear the person opposite me thanks to the 3 different songs being played around me.
Staff: helpful, courteous, always nearby (it’s a small place…!). The staff were the highlight of the evening. Service was prompt, a problem with a dish was fixed quickly and without fuss, and overall they were attentive.
Food: mediocre. I’ve had better pizza and better pasta elsewhere on the island for less money. This may be the best in Los Cristianos, but I feel it’s overpriced for what it is. The large portions do not make up for it – I’d far rather have quality than quantity. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the spectacular Italian food I’d been led to believe it would be. Starters were the high-point. Breads, meats and cheeses all very fresh and tasty.
Overall: if you’re in the area, want some ok Italian food and are hungry, then go. If you want a really good Italian meal and don’t mind travelling for it, there are better places to eat.
